OCDHS promotes and supports all members. As an advocate for growth of our profession, we also welcome active involvement of our student members. We further provide a professional platform and friendly atmosphere where hygienists can come together and exchange ideas, share knowledge, unite in community service, attend continuing education courses, and participate in Board Meetings. Through our society, colleagues become lifelong friends.Our HistoryThe era of the 50's promulgated an explosion of visionary ideas that materialized before our eyes. 1956 was nothing short of an epic and historical year. The world was introduced to network broadcasting, Elvis Presley's Heartbreak Hotel, King Kong, the Hydrogen Bomb, The Wizard of Oz, and the establishment of none other than the Orange County Dental Hygienists' Society. Martha Ann Rafn provided the foundation for OCDHS and served two terms as the First President. Orange County subsequently had four leaders fulfill a two-year term. The remaining four are two of our own serving on the Executive Board; Kim Cruz, Immediate Past President, (2009 - 2011); Rhonda McMorran,Trustee, (2007 - 2009); Carrie Kim (2001 - 2003), Rita Nep (1982 - 1984), and Debbie Siedel-Bittke (1997-1999). All are to be commended for their extended and extraordinary efforts serving as leaders.2010President 50, Kim Cruz, embarked on the First Free Dental Clinic incorporating members of OCDHS and students of Cypress College in Cypress, California in honor of Dental Hygiene Month - October 2010. Kim also brought social networking to the OCDHS arena via facebook. Stellar in her commitment to OCDHS, Ms. Cruz is a four-time recipient of The California Dental Hygienists' Association Outstanding Component Member of the Year Award. 2011OCDHS has continued to grow and evolve over the years. The American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) was formed in 1923 to develop communication and mutual cooperation among dental hygienists. Today, ADHA is the largest organization representing the professional interests of more than 150,000 registered and licensed dental hygienists in the United States.Membership in your professional association is an important step in being recognized as a professional and shows that you value your role as a dental professional. ORANGE COUNTY RDHAPs

Registered Dental Hygienists in Alternative Practice (RDHAP) assist in the coordination of on-site mobile dental hygiene treatment for special needs patients. This as an option to patients and their families who find it increasingly complex to come to the dental office for routine care. The RDHAP travels to the client's place of residence, hospital, or care center. Prior to this arrival, the RDHAP contacts the patient's M.D. (Medical Doctor) regarding the patient's present medical state. Precautions are discussed to ensure patient safety; which may include stopping certain medications that are contraindicated for dental cleaning appointments. According to the Board of Dental Examiners, an RDHAP needs to have a Medical Order Request signed by the M.D. or D.D.S. (dentist) once every two years within the first eighteen months of a patient's mobile dental treatment.The RDHAP offers customized dental hygiene services to special needs, homebound, elderly, and disabled. Working in partnership with staff and caregivers, education on oral hygiene is provided for personalized care of special needs individuals. Patients are provided treatment while seated in their wheelchair, bed, or in a portable dental chair. Care is provided with minimal stress in a familiar, safe environment. The result is a reduction of patient anxiety. Stress reduction could reduce the risk of procedure complication and aggravation of medical conditions. Research suggests that whole body health has a direct relationship with oral health. The bacteria from periodontal disease can enter the bloodstream and travel to major organs and begin new infections. Preventive dental procedures improve quality of life and health.The goal of an RDHAP is to provide preventive maintenance and services routinely to patients who may otherwise not see the dentist. RDHAPs are the mediators between the dentist and the consumer and can alert your office of any immediate dental needs. The fees are similar to those in a traditional dental office.
